Arch Taekwondo’s Thomas Grabs Silver Medal at USAT Nationals

LaTonja Thomas of Arch Taekwondo won a silver medal Friday at the USAT National Taekwondo Championships, the world’s largest taekwondo competition event.

Thomas, a second-degree blackbelt, placed second in the finals of the female 1st Masters Grassroots poomsae competition. The 1st Masters division featured black belt competitors aged 40-49 from all over the nation. Poomsae is the Korean name for taekwondo forms, which are sets of choreographed fighting movements judged by many looking at many things including accuracy of executing techniques, balance, power and speed.

“It’s a big deal for any participant to win a medal of any kind at the nationals, which draws the nation’s best competitors,” said Patrick L. Thimangu, Arch Taekwondo principal and master instructor. “This is an exceptional achievement for Thomas, for Arch Taekwondo and for the St. Louis region.”

Thomas was one of three Arch Taekwondo members competing at the USAT nationals. Other members of the team known as the Archtkd Warriors were Benjamin M. Thimangu and Eric R. Greitens.  Thimangu also competed in poomsae and reached the semi-final round in the male Ninja (8-9-year-old) blackbelt division.

Greitens competed in the the male Ultra (33- 39-year-old) middleweight sparring division. He was eliminated in the first round of competition.

Thomas qualified to compete at the national by winning a silver medal at the Kansas State Taekwondo Championships. Thimangu and Greitens earned thoer ticket to the event by winning gold medals at the Indiana State Taekwondo Championships.

The USAT National Championships, which is organized by USA Taekwondo,  is a six-day event, which was attended by 4,193 athletes. This year's competition, which ends Monday, was held at Chicago’s McCormick Place. USA Taekwondo is the nation’s recognized leading association of the World Taekwondo Federation, the Seoul, Korea-based body which governs the Olympic and international competition elements of taekwondo.
