MASTER INSTRUCTOR:

Patrick L. Thimangu, principal and master instructor, is a 5th Degree Kukkiwon certified blackbelt with more than 20 years of experience in Taekwondo. Thimangu, who is also an experienced journalist, began practicing Taekwondo in 1986, following a mugging in Nairobi, Kenya, his home town. He attended Kenya Taekwondo Association's main school then headed by Grandmaster Mogg Yoon. Master Ernest Olayo, one of East Africa's most highly regarded Taekwondo teachers, was his main instructor for four years. Olayo is a student of Grandmaster Han You Keun, who like Yoon, is a distinguished Korean pioneer of Taekwondo in Africa.

Thimangu came to the United States in 1990 for a university education. He earned his first-degree black belt in November 1993 under Grandmaster Dr. Duk Gun Kwon of Franklin Park, Ill. That year, Thimangu began to teach Taekwondo at the Kankakee Valley Park District in Illinois to help pay for his college tuition. He taught at the district for five years, a period during which he also earned Taekwondo instructor and referee certifications, completed undergraduate studies, found work as a full-time journalist and also earned a masters' degree.

Thimangu moved from Kankakee in 1998 and briefly lived in Indianapolis, where he worked as an Associated Press newsman. In 1999 he relocated to Ohio for a newspaper reporting job and resumed his Taekwondo training under Master Sun Park of Cincinnati. He tested for his third-degree black belt in 2001 (Kukkiwon certificate awarded in 2004). Thimangu moved to St. Louis in 2002 and began studying under Grandmaster Tae Hyen Park in Ballwin, Mo. Thimangu tested for his fourth-degree master level Kukkiwon certification under Grandmaster Kwon in 2007 and in 2009 earned his Kukkiwon master instructor certification. Until early 2009, when he opened Arch, Thimangu was a reporter at the St. Louis Business Journal. He lives in University City with his wife, Rachel, and their children Benjie and Eva.
